Smartphones Lead Ecommerce Growth In The UK

M-commerce is gaining ground fast, thanks to smartphones.

Customers in the UK spent a total of £133 billion online last year, majority of whom transacted on their smartphones, according to the data of IMRG Capgemini eRetail Sales Index.

Based on the IMRG Index’s numbers, sales made via smartphones increased by 47% in December compared to the same month in 2015, when smartphones accounted for 39% of the total sales from mobile devices.

Meanwhile, transactions on tablets reduced by 3% last year.

Justin Opie, managing director at IMRG, can think of two reasons that led to this phenomenon: “The first is that Black Friday became an ‘online’ event in 2015, and this seems to have had a lasting effect on people’s shopping behaviour and preferences. The second is that sales through smartphones are continuing to grow at a very strong rate, which is increasing the times and places in which people can browse and engage with online retailers.”

For many online shoppers, their smartphones come in very handy for comparing product features, price and shipping details, among other important things that one considers before making a purchase.

That goes to show that eCommerce sites with a responsive design have an edge over those that have a fixed width.

Let’s face the fact that intrepid shoppers are willing to try anything that is more convenient; in the eCommerce world, shopping on their smartphones is the easy route to obtaining what they want.

During the Christmas period last year, which ran from 13th November to 24th December, online shoppers spent £25 billion.

That’s a 16% increase from the amount which they spent in the same period in 2015.

Products in High Demand

As for which products sold the most, IMRG Index’s data show accessories as the best-selling category, with its online sales increasing by 38%, followed by lingerie (33%).
